Weatherly advances with OT win
Those country boys from out in the sticks did it to the City Slickers again.
And this one was the biggest yet.
Three times this season, Weatherly stormed into the heart of Nativity’s defense.
This time, it produced the biggest win of all — a 69-66 overtime victory Tuesday in the semifinal round of the District 11 Class 1A tournament.
The box score tells part of the story. The heart of this team was everyone who touched the ball.
Senior guard Ian McKeegan led the way with 31 points.
Corbin Wagner, his backcourt partner, reached the 1,000-point milestone while scoring 12.
Dominic Kokinda delivered 14 points and created problems all night.
Matt Adler added six points. Niko Saldukas and Brandon Davis also made key contributions.
But when the game was on the line, it was McKeegan who rose to the moment.
After missing two free throws with five seconds left and his team trailing 56-55, McKeegan watched Nativity senior Trey Keating step to the line. Keating, who finished with 33 points, had a chance to seal the game but missed one free throw with 4.1 seconds left, leaving Nativity ahead 57-55 in regulation.
Redemption was on McKeegan’s mind.
“I needed to make up for that miss,” he said to himself.
“All I told him, go coast-to-coast,” Weatherly head coach Luke Medico said, with Keating at the foul line.
McKeegan raced the length of the floor and kissed the tying shot off the glass as time expired.
The momentum carried into overtime. Weatherly opened the extra period with a 7-2 run. Adler scored inside. McKeegan added five quick points. Gloom turned to belief.
“What we wanted to tell them was the power in believing in yourself,” Medico said.
Medico embraces the team’s chaotic style.
“When we play with chaos we play better,” he said.
It may not be easy on the fans, but it works.
Weatherly trailed 34-23 late in the second quarter. Nativity controlled the boards and earned second and third chances. Medico was unhappy with the effort.
After a halftime challenge, the Wreckers responded. They shot 7-for-8 from the field during a 19-point surge. Kokinda scored six inside and grabbed three rebounds. McKeegan hit a 3-pointer, a 2-pointer and two free throws. Wagner added six points, including his 1,000th career point.
“I never thought much of basketball growing up, but ever since eighth grade I really started to think about the game,” Wagner said.
His milestone basket gave Weatherly a 42-38 lead with 2:53 left in the third quarter.
Nativity answered. Owen Holley, Layne Pasker and Keating sparked a rally to take a 47-44 lead into the fourth quarter.
The lead changed hands repeatedly.
Nativity moved ahead 56-53 with 35 seconds left. Holley made two of four free throws. Keating hit two more. McKeegan drove to the basket to cut the deficit to 56-55 with 18 seconds remaining, but missed two free throws moments later.
Keating split a pair at the line, leaving the door open.
McKeegan did the rest, racing to the basket and scoring at the buzzer to force overtime.
Weatherly now advances to face Bethlehem Christian, a 78-39 winner over Lincoln Leadership, in the district championship Friday at Catasauqua High School at 7:30 p.m. QUOTABLE I ... “My teammates have a lot of faith in me, and trust me a lot and it goes a long way,” McKeegan said.
QUOTABLE II ... “I was thinking about it the whole day, but when the game came up I was just worried about winning for our team,” Wagner said of reaching 1,000 points. TWO IN THE BOOKS ... McKeegan and Wagner both scored their 1,000th-career point this season. McKeegan reached the milestone in early January. THE REAPER ... Medico had high praise for Kokinda. “He’s like a mini-Kevin Durant, we call him the Little Reaper in practice.” THE NUMBERS ... Weatherly shot 29-for-60, grabbed 34 rebounds and committed 12 turnovers. Kokinda and McKeegan each had seven rebounds. Nativity shot 21-for-54 and pulled down 38 rebounds, led by Keating’s 17 and Nickolas Clark’s 11. Clark provided key rebounds early before Weatherly regrouped in the second half.
