FBLA collecting items for servicemen

The Jim Thorpe Area High School Future Business Leaders of America is asking the community to put pen to paper to write letters to deployed service members.

The letter writing campaign is part of Project RED (Remember Everyone Deployed), and is being organized by FBLA member Abby Hess. Hess’s brother, Brendan Carroll, a 2017 Jim Thorpe Area graduate, is deployed while serving as a U.S. Army captain.

Already, high school FBLA members are writing letters, and have a goal to pen at least 100.

They’re hoping to collect additional letters from the community through organized events, and to raise funds to purchase supplies for the deployed soldiers.

Students are also collecting toiletries, especially travel-sized items, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, razors, first aid items and sunscreen. Snacks like jerky, nuts and granola bars are appreciated, as are drink mixes, microwaveable meals such as Ramen noodle cups, and condiments.

In addition, white socks, books, playing cards and letter writing materials are being collected. Perishable items, alcohol and flammable products are not accepted.

Supplies and letters may be dropped off at Jim Thorpe Area High School between 7:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. through Wednesday.
