Tamaqua working on pool plans, gets donation

Tamaqua’s community pool will be closed this year for a total overhaul, but that hasn’t stopped the J.E. Morgan Foundation from making its annual donation.

Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt told borough council Tuesday that the philanthropic organization will once again turn over $60,000 for the pool.

“I got a letter this morning from the J.E. Morgan Foundation, and even though the pool is going to be closed for construction this year, they would like to still provide us with the annual $60,000 grant,” Steigerwalt said.

The funds are typically used for operation and maintenance of the H.D. Buehler Memorial Pool, more commonly known as “The Bungalow.”

Council approved a resolution to accept the donation.

Steigerwalt said that once the borough secures bonds and insurance for the pool project, he will schedule a pre-construction meeting.

“Then we will have a notice to proceed ready,” he said.

The base bid for the project is $3.66 million, and the borough has about $3.2 million set aside for it through various grants.

Multiscape Inc. will serve as general contractor and Vincent Pools will be the subcontractor.

The rebuild is necessary since the Bungalow’s walls are deteriorating beyond repair.

Also during the meeting, council approved Susan Coombe as a full-time assistant borough secretary/treasurer effective today, and Damian Flexer as a full-time wastewater treatment plant operator beginning Feb. 9.

Council gave its approval to send police Sgt. Thomas Rodgers to Police Executive Training in Allentown from March 16 — 27 at a cost of $1,359, and Officer Michael Hrebik to the Pennsylvania Narcotics Officers’ Association Conference in Harrisburg from March 25 — 27 at a cost of $150.

In addition, council approved handicapped parking space applications for 733 E. Broad St. and 316 N. Columbia St.
