Lady Bombers cruise past LVA
There is such a thing as winning ugly.
Neither team played a very good game Thursday night, but Palmerton did enough to get a 58-32 non-league win over the Jaguars of Lehigh Valley Academy Charter School.
Both teams didn’t rebound well, allowing their opponent to get multiple chances to put up points while turnovers — many of them unforced — were also an issue for the two squads.
One area where Palmerton did excel was in hitting shots from beyond the arc as they dropped in a total of 11 bombs, six of which were sunk by freshman Avery Barry. Three of the six came in the second quarter as Palmerton stretched its 19-5 first-quarter lead to 35-15 at halftime.
“I have always loved shooting from outside, and I was always pretty decent at it, so I have just kept working on it, and became very good at it,” said the freshman guard of her prowess for hitting long shots.
Big sister, Hailey Barry — a senior — added two three-pointers and Cate Morgan added three. The Jaguars had just one trey on the night.
If hitting the three-pointers was easy, scoring from the foul line was tough for Palmerton, who shot just 7-for-20 (35%) from the foul line. The Jaguars struggled even more, going 3-of-10 (30%) from the stripe.
Lehigh Valley Academy also had a distinct advantage in rebounding, especially on the offensive end. The Jaguars’ Letizia Buzzi pulled down 14 rebounds, seven of them offensive, as Lehigh Valley had 14 offensive rebounds in the game.
“We’ve got to be better than we were defensively tonight,” said Bomber head coach Jeremy Coleman. “We have to rebound better, and be better from the foul line than we were.”
Morgan hit her second three-pointer of the night with 2:37 left in the third quarter that pushed the Blue Bombers to their largest lead of the night to that point in the game — 48-22. LVA went on a 7-2 run late in the quarter to make it 51-29 after three quarters.
Palmerton senior Emma Rex finished with six points, and has been happy with how younger players have stepped up to fill in for injured senior Courtney Connell.
“The younger girls are playing a big part for us,” said Rex. “They’ve proven that they are able to play at this level, and they’ve played a big role for our team both offensively and defensively; they’re definitely helping out.”
The Bombers have now won five straight, and have clinched playoff spots in both the Colonial League and District 11 playoffs.
They are currently third in the overall standings in both the league and districts.
“Everybody is contributing, and everybody has stepped up their game to fill a void for our team,” said Coleman. “I think we are gradually starting to figure things out about what it takes to win. We have always had that next-girl-up mentality, and the girls are really working at doing that for us.”
Avery Barry’s 18 points were a game-high, and Morgan and Alisyn Green each finished in double digits with 11 points for Palmerton. Both Buzzi and Kavya Patel led Lehigh Valley with eight points.
REST UP, YOU’LL NEED IT … Palmerton is off until next Wednesday, and can put that time to good use in trying to figure out how to become the first team to beat Lehighton this season. The Indians are 15-0 overall, and 13-0 in the Colonial League. Lehighton downed Palmerton 39-25 when the two teams met a month ago on Dec. 15. Lehighton is the only undefeated team in District 11.
