Lehigh police recount pond rescue
The two Lehigh Township officers who helped rescue an elderly woman who fell in her pond while cleaning it Sunday afternoon said there would have been a bleak outcome if not for the use of her medical pendant.
Patrol officers Elias Batihk and Anthony Stinemire met with various media outlets early Monday afternoon at the township’s municipal office to answer questions about the incident they responded to at 2:36 p.m. Sunday in the 3400 block of West Walker Drive.
Batihk and Stinemire arrived, at which time they found an elderly woman waving her arms in the air.
With the help of a neighbor, Batihk and Stinemire were able to pull the woman out of the pond and relocate her to her house.
The woman, whom officers said was in her 80s, said she was cleaning her pond pump when she accidentally fell into the pond.
Northampton Regional EMS transported the woman to the hospital for medical evaluation.
They said the woman’s body temperature had plummeted to 88 degrees.
Batihk said that upon arrival, the woman’s neighbor, Mark Miles, assisted them in helping rescue the woman from the water and safely moved her into her home.
“She had been in the water for like 20 minutes,” Batihk said. “We had to pull her out of the water and get her into the house.”
Stinemire said the woman is at home and doing well.
The officers heaped praise on Miles, whom they said jumped into the water to stabilize the woman’s waist.
Officers stressed that medical pendants save lives, and encouraged caregivers to get their elderly loved ones to have a medical pendant on them at all times.
They offered this incident as proof that they not only work, but can also save lives.
Batihk, who has been with the department for the past 10 years, said he and Stinemire were just doing their jobs.
“Humanity; I’d want someone to do that for my grandmother, or my loved one,” Batihk said. “I think anybody would have done that, especially to save a life.”
Stinemire, who has been with the department for the past two years, agreed.
“It’s very nice we are being recognized,” Stinemire said.
