Monroe commissioners laud service of airport board supporter
Monroe County commissioners recognized Karl Weiler’s service on the Pocono Mountains Regional Airport board during their meeting on Nov. 5. Weiler is stepping down from the board.
Commissioner Chairman John Christy said, “Karl Weiler has been a driving force in that airport for years and years, and has shown the benefits and needs for a municipal airport up in Mount Pocono. And we thank him for his service.”
Commissioner Sharon Laverdure said she doesn’t know if the public realizes the importance of that airport and the number of people who fly in and out of there.
“It’s not a huge airport; I mean it accommodates all those different folks that are coming to Monroe County and all the services,” Laverdure said. “They help create services that we give to our communities, so I just think its really important”
Extension programs
In other business, members of the Penn State Extension gave an update to the commissioner on programs available to the public.
Jennifer Mercereau, the client relationship manager, gave information about four webinars that she thought the public would be find interesting.
The first is called Data Centers and Water Resources. It will be held on Wednesday and is free of charge.
The second is Your Money Matters, and it explores goal setting and decision making to develop money values and habits. This webinar runs for 10 weeks on Mondays and began on Nov. 10. It costs $10.
The third and fourth webinars are both free. They are Prevention Starts with Us and is about learning how to talk with youth about substance abuse, and New Research in Healthy Aging.
Nicole McGeehan, the extension educator for Food Safety and Quality, said they have an online food safety course for people who work as food safety managers and need to take the Serve Safe exam.
McGeehan said they also do home food preservation classes both in-person and online, and a Cooking for Crowds food safety course for nonprofit organizations who provide food to the public. That class is $75 per organization and allows for multiple people from the organization to attend. Additional helpful information can be found on their Facebook page called Penn State Extension Food and Health.
