Local counties helped judges win
When the Democratic judicial retention and election candidates scored decisive victories in Tuesday’s General Election their success was, in part, attributed to majority wins in Monroe, Lehigh and Northampton counties.
Those three counties in the Times News coverage area backed the seven judicial candidates, helping each of them to garner 10-year terms on their respective courts.
In Carbon and Schuylkill counties, the plurality of voters found themselves on the losing side of the judicial balloting as those counties cast the majority of their votes against the winners.
In at-large voting in the commonwealth, Supreme Court justices Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty and David Wecht, along with Superior Court Judge Alice Beck Dubow and Commonwealth Court Judge Michael Wojcik, scored victories in sizable margins, each winning retention to 10-year terms by hundreds of thousands of votes.
Donohue was a winner by a margin of 2,201,879 to 1,365,150; Dougherty, 2,198,461 to 1,363,045; and Wecht, 2,180,651 to 1,370,917.
Dubow gained another term by virtue of a 2,113,477 to 1,297,185 vote, while Wojcik’s retention came by a difference of 2,122,160 to 1,281,064.
Meanwhile, in the race for a seat on the Superior Court, Democrat Brandon Neuman was a landslide winner over Republican Maria Battista and Libertarian Daniel Wassmer. Neumann tallied 2,028,869 votes, compared to Battista’s 1,532,481 and Wassmer’s 70,592 votes.
The Commonwealth Court race was similar, with Democrat Stella Tasi defeating Republican Matt Wolford, 2,047,665 to 1,567,736.
