Schuylkill Connects promotes activity for ‘Week Without Driving’

Schuylkill Connects’ Schuylkill on the Move, a program to increase physical activity through walking, biking, wheelchair and public transit, will host “Week Without Driving” from Sept. 29 through Oct. 5.

As part of a growing national initiative, Schuylkill Connects is inviting residents to explore a new perspective on mobility.

Whether due to age, ability or financial circumstances, nearly a third of Americans cannot drive but rely on a transportation system designed for driving.

The Week Without Driving is a chance to see the world differently. Participants are encouraged to complete their daily routines without driving by using alternative forms of transportation instead.

“Living, working and learning in a rural county comes with its transportation obstacles,” said Mandy Fitzpatrick, executive director of Schuylkill Connects. “While we cannot solve them all them, we can do our best to educate our communities on the resources available to them and involve them in efforts to improve the walk, bike and bus infrastructure in Schuylkill County.

“Week Without Driving highlights how nondrivers get about our county and opportunities to improve active transportation for them and those looking to park the car.”

To observe the week, residents are invited to participate in the free Week Without Driving Scavenger Hunt. Participants will use an app to complete missions that include using Schuylkill Transportation System vans and buses (or alternatives if bus route is not in their community), walking or biking, share rides and visiting online resources.

Participants will have the opportunity to win prizes ranging from a bike to gift cards for local businesses.

In addition, Schuylkill Connects will distribute a survey to all 67 municipalities to gather information about current active transportation infrastructure, including current bus routes, bike racks, parks, playgrounds and trails in their communities.

“Connects has been meeting with STS staff to engage the public transportation in the week and Scavenger Hunt event,” Fitzpatrick said. “We look forward to encouraging participants to utilize their services and/or learn more about what is available to them, their families, neighbors and co-workers.”
