A 21-year-old Tamaqua man, who threw a rock at his mother’s car and pulled a box cutter on his grandfather after being told to do chores, was charged and jailed, according to Tamaqua police.
Police said they were called to Owl Creek Road at 4:39 p.m. Aug. 12 for a report of shots fired. They spoke to Rowan Kranch, who claimed that his grandfather fired a gun at him, police said.
Police spoke to a neighbor, who said that he heard shots but wasn’t sure where they came from.
Police then spoke to Kranch’s mother and grandfather. The two said that Kranch was asked to do chores and didn’t like it. An argument ensued, with Kranch throwing a rock through the windshield of the car and smashing a planter that was on a porch.
The grandfather then told Kranch to leave. At that point, police said, Kranch picked up a box cutter and struggled with the man. The man was able to get the box cutter, and while he told police that he was struck by it, he said that it did not pierce his skin or clothing.
Police asked about guns, but the mother and grandfather denied that any were fired. The grandfather told police, “People are shooting guns around all the time out here.”
Kranch was arraigned before Orwigsburg Magisterial District Judge Andrew J. Serina on charges of simple assault, criminal mischief/damage property and harassment.
Unable to post $5,000 cash bail, Kranch was sent to the Schuylkill County Prison.
Kranch, at a preliminary hearing Wednesday before Tamaqua Magisterial District Judge Stephen J. Bayer, waived the charges to Schuylkill County Court, according to online court documents.
