Lehighton man charged with spitting on officers

A Lehighton man is being charged with assaulting two state troopers while in custody last month.

On July 22, Malakhi Ayden Ray Tower, 20, was taken into custody on charges of terroristic threats, simple assault, making a false report to police, possession of an instrument of crime, and disorderly conduct.

Court records say while at the state police barracks in Lehighton, Tower reportedly became agitated, made comments, and threw water before spitting blood and saliva onto the floor. He had a facial injury from the incident.

Later that day, Tower was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Joseph Homanko Sr. and sent to the Carbon County Correctional Facility on $20,000 bail.

Before his transfer, he was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Carbon County for a medical evaluation.

At the hospital, police said Tower spit blood and saliva onto the floor, prompting troopers to place a spit guard over his head and restrain him on a gurney. The guard didn’t work, and he spit on the faces of both troopers, according to court documents.

Tower now faces additional charges: two counts each of assault on a law enforcement officer, harassment, and simple assault, as well as one count each of criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

He remains in the county jail in lieu of $10,000 bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Nov. 12 before District Judge William J. Kissner in Palmerton.
