Weissport updated on America250

Dr. Keith “Jake” Boyer updated the Weissport Borough Council about the America250 celebration planned for Weissport on July 4, 2026.

“We only have 11 months to go, and we’re going to have this big parade in Weissport,” Boyer said at the recent council meeting. “I talked to the guy (Curt Radabaugh) who will portray George Washington, and he’s bringing Martha Washington with him.”

The Lehighton Area High School Band is already scheduled for the parade, and the fire departments are expected to have trucks entered.

“Of course, you people will be invited in there,” he told council members.

Also at the meeting, council passed a motion to rent the jet wash from Palmerton Borough for no more than $4,800 for three days at the most. The actual rate is $200 per hour or $1,600 per day.

The jet wash will be used to clean out the drainage pipe on Bridge Street that is clogged and causing flooding near Chantilly Goods when it rains. Once the pipe is cleaned out, a camera will be used to try to see the cause of the clog.

Councilman Bill Hartzell said that he would get the exact price and information on the camera system to be used.

Other actions

• Council voted to spend no more than $700 to purchase tools needed by borough workers. The tools include a battery impact driver, the nut drivers that go with that, windshield washer fluid, and a tire plug kit to fix a nail in the tire of the zero-turn lawn mower.

• Council voted to purchase a Windows-based computer for not more than $500 for use in the office. “The Google Chromebook is not appropriate for business use,” borough Secretary Cheryl Miller said. “The Chromebook can then be used by council for whatever they might need it for.”

• Councilman Andrew Hottenstein was named the borough’s representative on the Weissport Event Committee and will be a signatory on behalf of the borough for the committee’s checking account.

Other matters

Council members expressed concern that several youths, possibly from Lehighton, have been damaging some street signs in the borough.

“The stop sign near my house was standing straight,” Hartzell said. “The next morning it was bent over into the street.”

“Take a picture,” solicitor Greg Mousseau suggested. “Their ages don’t matter. Just take a picture.”

Regarding the levee construction project by the Army Corps of Engineers, Borough Engineer Mike Muffley indicated that he did get some updates.

“They did a solicitation for bid proposals for the work, which are due July 24,” Muffley said. “So, hopefully, numbers will be coming in and will be acceptable to the Army Corps.”

The Army Corps will be repairing sections of the levee along the Lehigh River that were damaged by erosion caused by storms.
