Eldred awards contracts for roadwork
Eldred Township is getting ready for roadwork this summer.
The supervisors accepted bids for road materials and awarded the contracts during their meeting on May 21.
For paving work, the township received bids from three companies. Those companies and their total bid amounts were: Bruce George Paving and Excavation, $120,356.10; Bracalante, $123,177; and Lehigh Asphalt Paving and Construction, $121,170. The contract was awarded to Bruce George Paving and Excavation.
For materials, the township received bids only for oil from Shiffer Bituminous Service in Kunkletown for a total of $14,000 and Midland Asphalt Materials Inc. in Bloomsburg for $10,920. The supervisors went with Shiffer, because it is nearby, which saves the township on mileage, vehicle wear and tear, and the time needed to drive to Bloomsburg and back.
Lehigh Asphalt Paving and Construction did not bid on the oil, but did submit a bid for various stone sizes. Its bid was $82,000 for 2,100 tons of various materials. It was the only company to place a bid.
Jonathan Gula, the Public Works Department supervisor, said, “The reason that we put this out to bid is because they have to guarantee us that. We could purchase through COSTARS, but we’re not guaranteed that amount of stone.”
He said quarries ran out of stone last summer.
Gula also said his department plans to replace pipe on Borger Road.
“If you see us replacing every pipe on a road, expect that road to get paved the following year,” Gula said.
The department is replacing galvanized pipe with plastic pipe, then letting the ground settle for a year, and removing vegetation. After it is paved, they do shoulder work to finish the road.
“We’re just trying to do things to the best of our ability that we can with the money that we have,” he said.
The cost for the piping is $7,880.60 to Fry’s Plastic.
