SH monuments cleaned, park improved
The military veterans monuments in Summit Hill’s Ludlow Park have a refreshing new look.
The three monuments dedicated to specific wars have gotten a thorough cleaning, had overgrown arborvitaes removed and have been neatly adorned with reddish mulch in plenty of time for this year’s Memorial Day service.
The work was done, with the approval of Summit Hill Borough Council, by borough workforce supervisor Ronald Yuricheck and employee Colton Black.
Initially, the borough planned to have the monuments cleaned by an outside firm, which would have cost an estimated $3,000. Yuricheck convinced the council that he was able to do the work and save the borough that expense.
He and Black powerwashed the stones and completed the related work.
Yuricheck said he still has the large soldier monument to clean and possibly paint.
The arborvitaes were removed after consultation with the borough’s Shade Tree Commission. A letter to the council by Dr. Louis Vermillion, chairman of the commission, “supporting removal of the overgrown shrubs.”
The Summit Hill American Legion was also consulted and voiced no objections to the improvements.
Besides being overgrown with the large trees, the stones had become weathered and some even had moss growing on them.
Yuricheck said he must still replace decayed woodwork that surrounds the mulch. He said he is considering replacing the wood with stones, although he hasn’t made a definite decision.
A cherub statue in the park, heavily damaged by a vandal, has been repaired and reinstalled.
