Gilbert Legion hosts inaugural health and safety day
The American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert invited the community to a free event Saturday to learn about services.
“It’s a free event for health and safety for the community to learn about medical, electrical safety, self defense, animal health and resources,” stated Zachariah Taylor, vice commander of the post.
The first Community Health and Safety day included representatives from Lehigh Valley Health Network, The American Cancer Society, Community Vet Care and doTERRA, selling wellness products.
“Your cat may not be broken, but he still needs to be fixed.” read the shirts of Community Vet Clinic staff, advocating and explaining the importance of having your pets spayed or neutered.
Debbie Hartley, who was representing Carbon- Monroe-Pike Drug and Alcohol explained, “We’re giving away information about substance use disorder to help people understand addiction, and how Narcan can be lifesaving and important to everyone in the community.”
The “RX Drug Destroyer” was available at no cost. It is a small bottle, similar to a prescription bottle, that will neutralize the medication. After putting medication in it, you simply shake it and throw it out and it will not be a danger to anyone or landfills.
Steve Kulick, EMS Continuing Education Coordinator, demonstrated CPR on both humans and pets. Kulick said, “CPR training for pets is not part of the American Heart Association training, but we added it as they are a part of our family.”
The first step in dog or cat CPR in checking the pulse, which is located under the back legs.
Jennifer Bodemann of Saylorsburg, enjoyed “A juice that actually tastes pretty good and is good for your health” after sampling fish oil from the 100% sustainable products being sold by doTERRA.
Essential oils and 100% natural products for specific ailments were also available.
Stroudsburg Martial Arts Academy demonstrated self defense moves. Amari Davis, 14. who has been learning martial arts for eight months, said he enjoys it as “I like defensive fighting.”
Bobby Ventura played music for the crowd. Kids meals and barbecue were for sale, raising $500 for the American Legion.
