Kunkletown 1-room school hosts open house
Is it a picnic? Is it breakfast? Is it a museum visit? Is it an opportunity for your youngsters to run about and roll on the grass? On Saturday, it is all of these.
The historic Frantz One-Room Schoolhouse is inviting the public to bring their breakfast and a blanket and have a picnic on the schoolhouse lawn. Then they can go inside the 1855 former one-room schoolhouse to explore the past.
Tony Giordano, one of the hosts of the event, said, “One morning, my wife Renee and I were trying to decide what to do for breakfast. Stop at the diner? Stay at home and cook? Get a bacon, egg, cheese bagel at the General Store?”
In the end, they opted for the bagel from the General Store and drove up to the 1855 One-Room Schoolhouse and spread a blanket to enjoy the views of the rolling hill in the distance.
Renee Giordano added, “I just imagined our grandchildren running around and having fun and other families and couples relaxing while enjoying a leisurely breakfast and thought, ‘We have to put the word out and see what happens’.”
From 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, the schoolhouse will be open for visitors free of charge. Parking will be along the side of the road in order to keep the lawn free of cars. Folks are asked to clean up after their breakfast and take their refuse with them.
Parents are asked to supervise their children. Well-behaved pets are welcome, too.
The address is 485 Church Road in Kunkletown. Please note, there are no bathroom facilities at the site.
This event is weather dependent, so it could be canceled due to inclement weather. There is no rain date.
Space is limited so no more than 20 blankets at any one time. Feel free to RSVP and guarantee a spot. To ask questions or RSVP, please email churchroad@gmail.com.
