Red Cross giving free smoke alarms

The American Red Cross will team with the Tamaqua Fire Department for a “Sound the Alarm — Save a Life” event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 26.

The program provides free smoke alarms and installation to those in need.

On Saturday, members of the fire department will place notices on residents’ doors that will alert them that the detectors are free to those in need, according to Jay Stidham, Tamaqua’s director of public works. The notices will provide information on how to register for up to three, he told council Tuesday evening.

“If you need smoke detectors, by all means, ask for them,” council President Brian Connely said.

The organization is also offering alarms to those who are unable to install them, said Red Cross spokeswoman Cristina Maisel.

Residents can call 484-403-4734 to request an appointment for smoke alarm installation. Maisel said appointments can be made on different dates if the resident is not available on Oct. 26.

“Over the past year, the American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania has installed nearly 10,000 smoke alarms through our Sound the Alarm campaign,” Maisel said.

The organization shared that working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death from home fires in half.

The Red Cross is asking for volunteers to help install the alarms.

“Whether you’re handy with a drill or just great at giving high-fives, there’s a role for you. Plus, lunch is on us — so come hungry to help and leave full of community spirit,” according to the Red Cross.
