Lehighton looks to borrow paving roller from neighbors

Lehighton will again look to a neighboring community for an assist.

Kris Kunkle, supervisor of Public Works, mentioned the issues his department has with its paving roller.

Kunkle told borough council the roller has broken down.

Kunkle then asked whether council would be in favor of him reaching out to East Penn Township to use its roller.

Borough Manager Dane DeWire said that since it was going to cost $50,000 to do Seventh Street from the top of the hill down to Bridge Street, it put the borough over budget by $25,000, so it planned to cut that project for this fiscal year.

DeWire said after the meeting that the borough has a budget of $139,000 for paving projects this year.

“We decided it didn’t fit our budget,” DeWire said. “We do have extra money available.”

Public Works Assistant Superintendent Jeff Smith said he received permission from Mahoning Township officials to use their roller.

DeWire said Palmerton helped out three weeks ago by sending its crews out after hours to help Lehighton clear a blocked sanitary line on Mahoning Street.

Public Works will reach out to both East Penn and Mahoning townships to borrow a roller for a few days.
