Courthouse work within budget

Carbon County’s multimillion dollar courthouse renovation is on schedule and under budget, officials report.

On Thursday, Commissioners’ Chairman Michael Sofranko noted three agenda items that included several change orders to the project.

Change orders 4 through 14 increased the amount of the contract to CMG of Easton from $1,489,000 to $1,511,199.07. Changes included credits for work completed under the estimated bid; as well as additional items that were needed that hadn’t been factored in.

Change orders 5 through 22 decreased the contract total with G.R. Noto of Clarks Summit from $1,068,495 to $1,061,282.97. Changes included credit allowance changes.

A third change order to the contract with Boyle Construction Management of Allentown added $10,500 to the contract for additional engineering and architectural services by MKSD Engineers and Snyder Hoffman. The new contract price is $885,835.50.

Sofranko said that the county expected to run into some bumps along the way, but have worked to keep the project within the budget and on schedule.

In addition, Sofranko explained that the change order with Boyle is due to a previous discussion with the sheriff’s department and the stipulation for more space for that office.

This provides for drawings and safety regulations to be completed so that portion of the project could take place.

The Carbon County courthouse renovation began last November and is expected to be completed next spring.

The $5 million project is updating the HVAC system, moving some offices around and updating the functionality of the over 120-year-old courthouse.

After the project started, the sheriff sued the commissioners because there were no plans to create an adequate sized space for the department.

A settlement was reached in January between the two parties that the sheriff’s office would be able to use two additional rooms on the first floor, as well as basement space.
