Playground improvements continue in Tamaqua

Several projects are ongoing or set to start soon in Tamaqua.

Borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt updated council members during Tuesday evening’s meeting.

According to Steigerwalt, improvements to the South Ward and North Ward playgrounds are continuing.

“They are coming along pretty well,” he said.

The South Ward is getting a new fence and sidewalk repairs, and the North Ward is getting an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible entrance and paved walkways.

A new fence will cap off the North Ward renovations in the future.

Steigerwalt noted that resurfacing of Spruce and Clay streets will likely begin next week.

The contractor, he said, has set a tentative start date of Sept. 25.

The annual inspection of the Owl Creek dams is also on tap since council hired Alfred Benesch & Co. to do the work. Steigerwalt said the firm has inspected the dams over the past several years.

For the work, the borough will pay $5,000, which is $200 more than last year’s cost.

Steigerwalt noted that the borough received four responses to its recent request for proposals for pool consultants. Each of the companies, he said, submitted references and examples of their completed pool projects.

In other business, council:

• Approved handicapped parking spaces for 628 Arlington St. and 202 Pine St.

• Approved the transfer of Ernie Shilko to the water distribution worker position.

• Will waive any zoning and permit fees for American Hose Company No. 1 to replace a damaged sign.

• Heard from Mayor Nathan Gerace that trick-or-treat night will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 26. The Halloween Parade will be held beginning at 7 p.m. Oct. 22, with a rain date of Oct. 23.

• Added Kyle Oliphant as an alternate to the Tamaqua Planning Commission.

• Agreed to close South Railroad Street between West Broad and Spruce streets for a car show on Sept. 22.

• Received correspondence from the Tamaqua American Legion noting that the annual Veterans Day Parade will be held beginning at 10 a.m. on Nov. 9.
