West End Fair rides in full swing
After a rainy start that washed out much of Sunday’s festivities, the West End Fair hit its stride Monday as the rides became the main attraction for many families. From 2-6 p.m., rides were free of charge, a gesture that brought in a wave of eager fairgoers.
“I went on the Ferris wheel three times, Emma Collins, 8, said. “I love being up high. It feels like you’re flying over everything.”
While the Ferris wheel provided a more picturesque form of entertainment, 11-year-old Brett Martinez opted for an Avengers-themed ride that lifts passengers up, then holds them at the top before suddenly dropping them back to the ground.
“That was awesome,” Martinez said after getting off the ride. “My heart was racing when we were at the top, and then we just dropped so fast.”
Parents, too, were thrilled to see their children enjoying themselves after heavy rains dampened the fair’s opening day.
Though Monday wasn’t without a shower here and there, families were able to get the most of their four-hour free ride window.
“It’s been a great day,” said Samantha Collins, Emma’s mother. “With the rain yesterday, we weren’t sure how the week would go, but today has really made up for it. The rides are great and it’s awesome to see the kids having so much fun.”
Ride operators were also pleased with the turnout.
“It’s always great to see so many people coming out, especially the kids,” said Tom Reynolds, who has been working fairs across the state for over a decade. “Seeing their big smiles makes it all worthwhile.”
The fair continues Tuesday with Sensory Day from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. All military are admitted free with identification. Guests can get $2 off admission with a gift that fits in a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child.
