Coaldale gets tough on overdue accounts

Coaldale residents who are behind on their sewer transmission fees risk having their water shut off.

Borough council, during Tuesday’s monthly meeting, adopted a resolution that would cut off water to those who haven’t paid their sewer fees for six weeks or more after the due date.

At that point, the borough will begin the process of turning off water to their premises.

Once the delinquent bills are paid, water would be turned on again. Residents would be responsible for paying the fees to have their water shut off and turned back on.

Councilwoman Kim Gavornik said the borough is owed $140,000 in sewer transmission fees.

Council President Claire Remington said shutting off the water is a way to recoup the funds.

In an unrelated matter, council approved the purchase of a laptop and desktop computer for the Coaldale Police Department’s office, and a laptop for police cruisers at a cost of $3,354.55.

“The laptops are outdated. They don’t last very long,” Remington said.

Council also gave the go-ahead for a $300 purchase of batteries for police radios.
