Man charged for failing to update status
A Weissport man convicted of statutory sexual assault has been charged for failing to update his status.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by borough police Chief Matthew Williams in the case against Chase Degeneste:
On Feb. 5, Williams received a request for investigation from the Pennsylvania State Police Megan’s Law Section that Degeneste, 33, who was convicted of statutory sexual assault, had a last-known address in the 200 block of White Street.
Police said he had failed to appear at the PSP Lehighton barracks during a required verification window between Nov. 1 and Nov. 10. He was not at the Weissport address so Williams sent a letter to his address listed on his driver’s license in Northampton County. The letter was returned to the Weissport police station as undeliverable.
At 11 p.m. March 1, Williams was in the 200 block of White Street conducting a follow-up investigation into a theft from a vehicle. While there, Williams was speaking with a woman and her 17-year-old son when she said that Degeneste lived in the apartment with her.
Williams then requested that the woman go inside the apartment and ask Degeneste to step outside so he could speak with him regarding his Megan’s Law status.
Degeneste said that he was unaware that he had to go to the PSP Lehighton barracks to verify his address as per Megan’s Law, and said he never received any paperwork in the mail.
Degeneste also said that he was being supervised by Carbon County Adult Probation, and that he thought he was in compliance of his registration requirements. Degeneste also said that he has resided at the address with the woman since his release from prison in 2023.
Degeneste was advised that he needed to get to the PSP Lehighton barracks to verify his address in order to be in compliance with Megan’s Law requirements, which Degeneste said he would do the next day.
He has not updated his address and faces a charge of failure to comply with registration requirements.
Degeneste is incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $50,000 monetary bail, and scheduled to have a preliminary hearing March 20 before District Judge Eric M. Schrantz of Jim Thorpe.
