Lansford officials prioritize street projects
Lansford Borough Council on Tuesday discussed paving streets and working with neighboring Summit Hill on street sweeping.
Council Vice President Jay Doyle discussed a list of streets that need to be paved, noting that crews will work on streets most in need first.
Streets include: Abbott from Springgarden to Walnut and Abbott from Springgarden to Tunnel; Bertsch Street between Springgarden and Tunnel; Ridge from Centre to Cortright and Centre to Springgarden; and Kline: the 300 West, 200 East and 600 East blocks.
Dock Street near the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum and the entire length of Dock Street needs repair, Doyle said.
Doyle said they are looking to do Ridge Street with grant funding, and the borough is also looking at grants for Dock Street.
Council President Bruce Markovich said that they will be looking at an Intermodal grant next month.
Doyle also had several cross streets, or hills, on the list to be paved, including Powell Street, Coal Street between Patterson and Ridge; Centre from Water Street to the borough garage, and the intersection of Jones and Ridge streets.
Councilman Jack Soberick noted that they have to do the handicapped curb cuts if they repair an intersection.
“If there are crosswalks, they have to have the ADA compliant ramps,” he said.
Butrie pointed out that the ramps cost about $4,000 each.
Resident Tom Vadyak pointed out issues with the Abbott Street extension, which goes down toward Boyer’s, which is heavily used. He also noted problems with a drainage ditch in the area. Doyle noted the concerns and thanked him.
Sweeping
Doyle reached out to Summit Hill to see if the borough would work with them on street sweeping.
“Shared services should help us out with that,” he said.
Lansford was looking for a used street sweeper last year, but didn’t find one within its budgeted amount. Council budgeted $100,000 this year for the purchase of sweeper.
“That’s how we used to do it before, shared services” Councilman Joe Butrie said. “When someone didn’t have one, we went up and did theirs. We also did Coaldale, too.”
Doyle said he hopes to hear from Summit Hill soon, and be able to start street sweeping.
