Nesquehoning to upgrade police dept. guns

Nesquehoning officials are upgrading the borough police department’s guns following a donation from an area business.

Last week, borough council approved a purchase of 10 new firearms from Jim Thorpe Guns and Ammo at a cost of $10,655.

Police Chief Michael Weaver said the cost for the new Glocks, as well as holsters and optics will be covered from a donation, as well as through selling the used firearms back to Jim Thorpe Guns and Ammo.

Council also ratified a motion to purchase three additional body camera licenses from Axon at a cost of $2,198.

It was noted that this is an interim measure for the police to be able to start using body cameras since currently the borough doesn’t have enough body cameras for all officers on the force.

Three additional cameras need to be purchased.

Weaver said he spoke with a customer representative from the company regarding the body cameras and things are being finalized.

In other police matters, council:

• Approved firearm inspector class for officers Corey Herring and Fred Lahovski Jr.

• Approved donating one police radio to Panther Valley school police for use and to improve communications between the borough police department and school district.
