With warmer weather on the horizon, a Palmerton official wants to soon see the police department’s bike patrol take to the streets.
Borough Mayor Don Herrmann said at Thursday’s borough council meeting he wants to see more officers out in the public.
Herrmann mentioned the department has three bikes at its disposal, two regular bikes and one e-bike.
He said the department has three officers certified for bike patrol.
The department recently received a donation from Keystone Harley-Davidson of a Serial 1 MOSH/CTY e-bike to the department.
In February 2022, council agreed to reinstall the initiative after Herrmann announced that two Trek bicycles had been purchased through a combination of donations.
The donations came from Harold Schisler of Campton Funeral Home, along with Dr. Louis Sportelli, DC.
That action came one month after Herrmann said he would like to see the bike patrol implemented.
The police department previously had a bike patrol that started in June 2013 before it was discontinued.
JAG grant
In other police department-related activities, council on a 6-0 vote agreed to send a letter of support and commitment for the JAG grant.
It was noted that the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant would be used for the police department to update its bodycams.
Borough police Chief Tim Kromer said the department has had some issues with durability.
Kromer said that the department’s current bodycams are about three years old.
