Courthouse renovation on schedule

Carbon County’s $5 million dollar courthouse renovation project is on schedule and on budget, officials report.

On Thursday, Commissioners’ Chairman Michael Sofranko said that the project is moving ahead as planned and is even ahead of schedule in some areas.

In addition, construction crews are staying within the budget, something Commissioner Rocky Ahner has voiced over the last year that he needs the county to work on.

“We’re working very hard on that,” Sofranko said.

But that doesn’t mean that the future plans will all run smoothly.

Sofranko eluded to some potential issues that may be coming up, but that the board will address them as they arise.

Carbon County has been working on the courthouse project for several years, with bids finally being awarded last year.

Four contracts were given to low bidders CMG of Easton Inc. for general construction; JBM Mechanical Inc. for mechanical work; K.C. Mechanical Inc. for plumbing; and G.R. Noto Electrical Inc. for electrical work.

The project on the over 120-year-old courthouse, which aims to update HVAC, electrical, plumbing and move some offices around, began in November and is expected to take approximately 18 months.

Some departments have temporarily relocated to other office buildings during the construction.

The historic appearance of the courthouse will remain unchanged.
