Employees of Vision Government Solutions are collecting data on properties in Tamaqua as part of the ongoing Schuylkill County Reassessment Project.
“I believe they are leaving a flyer at everyone’s house they visit,” borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt told borough council at Tuesday’s meeting.
He said the borough has been receiving calls about the data collectors.
“They are allowed to go on people’s properties but you don’t have to let them inside your home,” Steigerwalt said.
Borough Police Chief Michael Hobbs said the department has also gotten calls about the assessors from concerned citizens.
Council President Brian Connelly said he has spoken to a few of the Vision employees.
“They are strictly check-the-box, data collection folks,” he said. “They’re not asking questions, they’re not deciphering rules or trying to figure anything out.”
During visits, Vision employees verify property descriptions and take photographs of structures. The data collectors do not set property values and gathered data in a prescribed format, according to information from the county.
They display an official county identification, travel in marked vehicles and knock on doors.
“If an individual approaches you as a data collector, but cannot produce proper credentials, you should not permit him/her onto your property; the police and Reassessment Office should be notified immediately,” according to information from the county.
Assessors have completed data collection in a number of municipalities. They are now visiting Tamaqua, Walker Township, West Penn Township, Schuylkill Township, New Ringgold and other areas.
