A Coaldale man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol by borough police following a two-vehicle crash at 2:38 a.m. Jan. 20.
Police said Robert Middleton, 51, didn’t remember he was involved in the crash.
According to police, officers were dispatched to Fifth and Water streets for an accident.
At the scene, Middleton was standing near his heavily damaged truck. Police said Middleton’s face was bloody and he said he believed he had broken his leg.
While waiting for emergency responders to arrive, officers told him to apply pressure to his facial wounds. Police said Middleton kept saying that he wanted his phone and his food but couldn’t find either. Police said he asked them what happened and they told him that he was in an accident. Upon hearing so, officers said Middleton looked shocked and asked where he was.
Police said he had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, and his speech was slow.
While Middleton was in the care of emergency responders, officers spoke to the woman involved in the crash. She told police that she was driving from Tamaqua toward Lansford when a truck heading in the opposite direction came into her lane and hit her vehicle head-on.
Following the crash investigation and reopening of the road, police went to St. Luke’s-Miners in Coaldale and asked Middleton if he was taking any medications that would impair his driving. He said he was not.
Middleton consented to a blood-alcohol test, which was sent for analysis and revealed that he had a blood alcohol content of 0.174%.
Police charged him with DUI, DUI-highest rate of alcohol, and driving on right side of roadway.
