The Renaissance Historic Meed's Memorial Methodist Church on W. Catawissa Street in Nesquehoning was broken into Wednesday night. According to parishioners Cindy Christman and Mary Fox, nothing appeared to be missing.
"The church was ransacked. All the file cabinets and food cabinets were pulled open," Fox said.Christman and Fox both believe who ever broke into the church was looking for money."We don't keep any money. They went from top to bottom of the church looking," Christman said.A large hole was noticed by a church parishioner on her way to a doctor's appointment. The woman called Christman to see if work was being done to the church.Nesquehoning Police dusted for fingerprints and filed a report after they were called Thursday morning.Police are looking for a person of interest described as a white man, approximately 6 feet tall wearing a white shirt, white socks and sandals.The most severe damage was to the lock on the front door. Boards and a padlock were applied to secure the building temporarily.The Meed's Church or "Town Clock" was built in 1889 and provides the community with several programs including a children's free lunch.The free lunch program was suspended during investigation but will return along with vacation Bible school week on Monday.Anyone with information is asked to contact Nesquehoning Police at 570-669-9111.
