From confident to nervous, a select group of Tamaqua Elementary School second-graders experienced the full gamut of emotions Friday afternoon.
There were several nerve-wracking moments for the 20 students who did their best to give the letters to words during the school's third annual spelling bee. While a few students were eliminated from the contest early for misspelling their words, the vast majority of students spelled their words correctly to advance to the next round. The eventual winner was Isidora Neifert, who correctly spelled the word "fixture."For her efforts, Isidora was greeted with a loud ovation by her fellow classmates.Afterward, Isidora said she was happy that she won the contest."I was like excited, and I was telling people 'good job,' " Isidora said. "It means a lot to me because I know a lot of words to spell."Isidora said she was relieved that she was able to spell her words correctly."I was like, do I know these words, or do I not know these words," she said. "I just tried my best."Fellow second-graders Xavier McKinney and Ava Jones finished second and third, respectively.Instructor Johanna Morrison said the top four spellers were chosen from each language class to participate in the spelling bee.
