jkramer@tnonline.comWeatherly borough has been sitting on two grants in preparation for its proposed new police station and a magistrate district judge office. At the council meeting Monday night, officials explained the building plan that has been underway for the past two years and said it is also looking into the possibility of securing funding for a new municipal building. The government project currently underway will be made possible through a Local Share Grant of $600,000 that the borough received for the project, as well as a $475,000 federal grant the Carbon County Commissioners redirected for the borough's use.In 2013, the commissioners approved a subgrantee agreement between the county and the borough for the latter to receive an Economic Development Initiative grant secured for the county by former Rep. Paul Kanjorski through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. As a result of the action, Weatherly will use its grant, and the county's, to construct a building on the former Tung-Sol Plant property where the county will occupy it for the future magisterial district office currently headed by Judge Joseph Homanko. The plan is for the collective $1.075 million plus the value of the land, to be used as a match for a Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grant that requires a dollar-for-dollar match but would make over $2 million for the project. The county has been looking to relocate the magistrate's office in order to meet the demands of its growth in northern Carbon County. On Monday, Mayor Tom Connors said the borough is looking forward to the project."We are very excited. We will be meeting with representatives of the Governor's Action Committee on July 28 in the hopes of securing an RACP (Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program) grant."With the existing funds used to match the grant, the borough hopes to secure an additional $1.2 million to go toward a new municipal building as well, he said."We have the 16-acre Tung-Sol property shovel ready," Connors said.
