Schuylkill County’s Prison Board has two people in mind for correctional officer jobs.
Latosha Roach is expected to move from a part-time officer to full time, and Tyler Barnes of Ashland is being considered as a part-time officer.
The prison board gave both the nod at a public meeting Wednesday.
They still need to be approved by county commissioners and their wages set by the salary board.
As of Wednesday, there were two vacant full time positions and 12 part time positions.
In other matters, Warden David Wapinsky reported the county will save $8,000 by using staff training videos through the County Commissioners Association of Pennsylvania as opposed to its previous provider, Relias Training.
Also on Wednesday, the board learned there 59 inmates being housed out of the county at a cost of about $70 per inmate per day. There were 34 in Centre County and 25 in Clinton County meaning it costs the county $4,130 per day plus transportation costs.
The inmates were sent to the other prisons to alleviate overcrowding.
Sending excess inmates to other counties began in 2016, after the state Department of Corrections learned that too many inmates were living three to a cell due to overcrowding. The department ordered the county to stop accepting new inmates if the average daily inmate count topped 277.
To meet that requirement, the county began sending overflow inmates to out of county prisons.
