Wind chill causes concern about dogs on the loose

Several dogs on the loose in the region caused concern Friday afternoon amid dangerously cold wind chills.

Tom Connors, director of the Carbon County Animal Shelter, said a dog has been on the loose in Summit Hill.

“We’re not sure who it belongs to; the last report is up by Mauch Chunk Lake,” Connors said. “Did set trap down there, but we haven’t seen it since.”

Connors said there were also two young white German shepherds on the loose that belong to the same owner in the Mahoning Township area.

“They were running together, now they’re separated; the one was spotted without the other,” he said. “As far as we know, they’re both still missing.”

Connors said it’s essential for the public to report such instances.

“It gets tough when they are running,” he said. “What helps is when people report their location and where they are seen because then we can try to track them.”

Connors stressed the importance that the dogs be found, especially in such frigid conditions.

“We have a lot of people working with us looking; hopefully we’ll be able to get them back home soon because we’re concerned about the colder weather,” he said. “The sooner, the better.”
