Carbon man admits to sexual assault

A Carbon County man admitted in court on Tuesday to sexually assaulting a teenage girl over a six and a half year period.

David A. Gavornik, 49, of Jim Thorpe, faces a long state prison sentence after pleading guilty to eight criminal counts. He was originally charged with 169 counts including 24 counts of rape and 145 other charges, including statutory sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a person less than 16 years of age, unlawful contact with a minor (sexual offenses), sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, endangering the welfare of children, corruption of minors and indecent assault.

Gavornik pleaded guilty to felony counts of unlawful contact with a minor - sexual offenses, sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault of a person less than 16, endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated indecent assault person less than 13, corruption of a minor and indecent assault, person less than 13. He also pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of indecent assault, person less than 13.

Assistant District Attorney Bran B. Gazo, who prosecuted the case, said in a plea agreement with the defendant, and approved by the victim’s family, Gavornik will be sentenced to a state prison term of 6 to 12 years on the charges.

Jim Thorpe police arrested Gavornik, who lives on the 300 block of West Broadway, following a series of reports and interviews that took place in July 2021. The girl, then 15 years old, told police Gavornik performed various sexual acts on her between Jan. 1, 2015, and July 12, 2021.

Gavornik didn’t speak during the hearing except to answer questions by Judge Steven R. Serfass, who accepted the pleas.

Sentencing was deferred because the charges fall under the provisions of Megan’s Law. Gavornik will be evaluated by the state sexual offenders assessment board to determine if he is a violent sexual offender.

Serfass ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.

Serfass noted that Gavornik will have to register the rest of his life as a sexual offender.

Gavornik has been in the county prison since his arrest. He is being held on $250,000 straight cash bail.
