Trial starts for man accused of sexual assaulting 2 girls
A Wayne County man went on trial Tuesday in Carbon County court, charged with sexually assaulting two young girls in May 2020.
George Karagiannis, 30, of 58 Locust St., Honesdale, has been charged by the office of the Attorney General with felony counts of rape of a child, two counts each of aggravated indecent assault and corruption of minors, four counts of unlawful contact with a minor and one count each of contact with a minor sexual manner, photograph/film depicting on computer a sexual act and criminal use of a communication device.
Police say the assaults happened in Summit Hill.
Police were informed of the incidents in July 2020, and began an investigation.
Office Michael Leighton began the investigation and later turned it over the Attorney General’s office. The AG’s office assigned it to the internet Crimes Against Children unit.
Testimony revealed that the two girls, who are sisters, were 12 and 13 at the time of the incidents and Karagiannis was 27-28.
The girls testified that they met a man, first identified as “John M” on a social media site called Omegle. The younger girl was the one who first met the man, later identified as Karagiannis, and then told her sister. She said they began speaking to each other on Snapchat and the man’s Snapchat name was “Blankman5590.”
The girls said they ended up sending the man nude pictures of themselves. The man then sent back a face picture and then a graphic photo. The man then asked them to meet him and that he would pick them up in his truck. The girls testified that the man told them to wear dresses and do their hair.
That night the girls said they did sneak out of the house at midnight. Both said they were sexually assaulted by the man in the borough.
The girls testified that they went to Ludlow Park and sat on a bench. Later they saw a truck driving around the park, then parking, and a man getting out of it. He walked over to them and offered them cigarettes.
One girl testified the man started to kiss her as he touched her inappropriately. The man then pulled down his pants exposing himself to the girls.
The girls got into the truck and the man drove to a wooded area and parked. In the truck the girls said the man sexually assaulted both of them. He then returned to the park and they exited the truck and went home.
Later the man contacted one of the girls on Snapchat. She then blocked him and unfriended him on her phone.
Testimony revealed that the younger girl resided in Summit Hill with her mother while the other stayed with her father in Indiana County. The parents are separated. She said she was visiting her sister in Summit Hill when the incident happened.
On July 29, 2020, a forensic interview was conducted at the Children’s Advocacy Center in Scranton with both girls being questioned separately.
Karagiannis was later arrested and declined to talk with authorities.
Also testifying was the then girlfriend of the girls’ father. The girls told her in July about the incident in May. She said she called the girls’ mother and told her. The girls’ mother testified that she then went to Summit Hill police and filed a complaint.
A forensics nurse, who specializes in sexual assault cases, testified about her interview with one of the girls.
The trial, being presided over by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II, resumed at 9 a.m. today.
