Slatington hires new part-time police officer

In addition to a new police chief, Slatington council also hired a new part-time police officer Monday night during their monthly meeting.

Council approved hiring Amanda Segarra. She will begin work once a criminal background check and physical and psychological exams are completed, which are required for employment for all police officers.

The council also considered hiring a full-time police officer.

“There’s no action on this,” said borough Manager Dan Stevens.

Mayor Jeralyn Schoch said, “I have to wait until I get the rest of the application back.”

Stevens said they could discuss it further in executive session. The item was tabled.

The council approved several expenditures. One of them is for the replacement of the floor in the police department. They received a quote from the Slatington Floor Center with a cost of $10,160. Council accepted the quote.

Also approved were:

• Signing with AACE Security in Northampton for protector.net licensing for the police department for $810 for five years;

• Allocating $5,200 from the COVID-19 funds through the American Rescue Plan to repair both the ladder truck and pumper truck for the fire department, and;

• Purchasing a Peerless Pump Model 5PV7 for the water treatment plant for $6,650 from Kohl Brothers Inc. in Myerstown.

The borough is also receiving a grant. Slatington will receive a Chamber Foundation grant for $1,000 to go toward the cost of a new “Welcome to Slatington” sign. The borough will receive the grant at a reception on Aug. 31 at the Northampton County Club. The borough is replacing two signs that will be made by Mertz Signs in Germansville.
