Charges against a former Tamaqua Area High School football player have been bound over to the Schuylkill County Court of Common Pleas.
Magisterial District Judge Thomas H. Xavios, Orwigsburg, sent the charges to court following Tuesday’s preliminary hearing for Zachary McGlinchey, 18, of Tamaqua.
According to court dockets, McGlinchey faces two misdemeanor counts of simple assault and three summary counts of harassment.
The charges stem from a Nov. 4 incident that occurred at the football team’s field house at 329 Orwigsburg St., Tamaqua.
During the incident, McGlinchey struck a juvenile victim in the face with a closed fist and “forcefully pushed a banana against his clothed anus.” McGlinchey was a senior student at the time and was expelled from school following the incident.
The charges were filed March 27 by Tamaqua Sgt. Thomas Rodgers.
McGlinchey is free on $20,000 unsecured bail.
He was crowned the school’s homecoming king on Oct. 15, a few weeks before the alleged incident.
His hearing was originally scheduled for May 5 before Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer, Tamaqua. It was transferred to Xavios’ court after Bayer recused himself.
