Homeless man given more prison time after plea

A homeless man was given more prison time on Thursday after pleading guilty in Carbon County court to a new criminal offense.

Charlie Wiley, 38, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve six to 18 months in the county prison on a charge of criminal trespass, a felony 3.

He was charged for an incident on Nov. 24, 2021, in Kidder Township. An owner of a home in Albrightsville came to the property and found Wiley hiding in the basement. Township police responded and took custody of Wiley.

In March, Wiley was sentenced in the county court to serve three to a day less 24 months on a charge of receiving stolen property. He was charged by Jim Thorpe police for an incident on Aug. 5, 2020, at the Turkey Hill along Susquehanna Street where he stole a cellphone of a borough resident.

Matika also ordered Wiley to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations and follow any recommendations for treatment, render 50 hours of community service, make restitution of $137.50 to the homeowner for damages, supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of over $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.

Wiley said he has a chance to secure employment. Matika granted him work-release privileges if the work is approved by the prison work-release director.

Matika also ruled the sentence run concurrent with Wiley’s sentence imposed in March.
