Incumbent GOP state representative behind in votes
A Republican incumbent state representative lost his Primary Election contest on Tuesday in parts of Lehigh County.
Rep. Gary Day, a Heidelberg Township resident who represents the 187th district, lost a party challenge to Ryan E. Mackenzie of Lower Macungie Township. There were no Democratic candidates.
Mackenzie tallied 5,612 votes to defeat the incumbent. The latter tallied 3,539 votes. The district includes parts of Lehigh County, consisting of the townships of Heidelberg, Lower Macungie, Lynn, Upper Macungie (part, districts 3, 7 and 8), Washington and Weisenberg and the boroughs of Alburtis and Macungie.
Meanwhile, uncontested contests for three other seats in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives resulted in token voting by Democrats and Republicans in Tuesday’s Primary Election, but there will be races in November in two of the three districts.
Tuesday’s balloting set the table for a race in Carbon County, which is now the 122nd Legislative District, where Rep. Doyle Heffley, a Republican, is seeking re-election.
Heffley, of Lower Towamensing Township, was unopposed and collected 7,316 complimentary votes.
He will face Palmerton resident Richard F. Kost in November. Kost tallied 3,896 token votes as the unopposed Democratic candidates.
There will also be a race for the two-year term in the 176th District, which includes parts of Monroe County.
In the 176th, Rep. Jack Rader, a Republican from Jackson Township, is seeking re-election and was unopposed yesterday. He tallied 5,232 token votes and will go head-to-head with Democrat Hope Christman of Chestnuthill Township, who was unopposed within that party. Christman received 1,856 token votes.
The district includes part of Monroe County, consisting of the townships of Chestnuthill, Eldred, Hamilton, Jackson, Polk, Ross, Tobyhanna and Tunkhannock.
Meanwhile, in the 183rd District, incumbent Rep. Zach Mako, a Republican, is seeking re-election and appears to be positioned to return to Harrisburg as he was unopposed on both the GOP ballot and the Democratic slate. He collected 7,347 token votes from GOP members yesterday.
The district includes parts of Lehigh County, consisting of the townships of Heidelberg, Lower Macungie, Lynn, Upper Macungie (part, districts 3, 7 and 8), Washington and Weisenberg and the boroughs of Alburtis and Macungie.
Elsewhere in state legislative balloting, in districts that border the Times News coverage area, former McAdoo Mayor Dane J. Watro Jr. won a six-person GOP race in the 116th district and will challenge Democrat Yesenia Rodriguez for the two-year term.
Watro tallied 2,109 votes, defeating Michael A. Larocca, 916, John W. Chura, 765, Gary J. Perna Jr., 580, Nico R. Makuta, 468, and Dyllan M.A. Ogurkis, 367.
Rodriguez collected 1,869 complimentary votes.
The district includes part of Luzerne County, consisting of the City of Hazleton, the Township of Hazle and the Borough of West Hazleton and parts of Schuylkill County, consisting of the townships of East Union, Kline, Mahanoy, North Union and Union and the boroughs of Mahanoy City, McAdoo, Ringtown and Shenandoah, and represents 63,945 residents.
In the 123rd District balloting, Rep. Tim Twardzik, a Republican from Butler Township, is seeking re-election and was unopposed by party members, collecting 7,303 token votes. He will face Democrat Kathleen J. Benyak in November. She collected 4,362 complimentary votes from party members as an unopposed candidate yesterday.
The district includes parts of Schuylkill County, consisting of the City of Pottsville, the townships of Blythe, Branch, Butler, Cass, East Norwegian, New Castle, North Manheim, Norwegian, Wayne and West Mahanoy and the boroughs of Ashland (Schuylkill County portion), Cressona, Frackville, Gilberton, Girardville, Gordon, Mechanicsville, Middleport, Minersville, Mount Carbon, New Philadelphia, Palo Alto, Port Carbon, Schuylkill Haven and St. Clair. There are 65,886 residents in the district.
