Carbon man given prison term for fleeing police, assault
A Carbon County man was sentenced to a county prison term on Friday on charges of flight to avoid apprehension and simple assault, stemming from separate cases.
Matthew Scott Creveling, 32, of Lansford, was sentenced by President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to serve one day less 12 to one day less 24 months in prison on the flight charge and one to 24 months on the assault charge with the terms running concurrently. He previously entered pleas to the charges.
He was charged with the flight count for an incident on March 26, 2021. Lansford police saw Creveling in the area of Bertsch and Chestnut streets and knew there was a felony warrant for him. Police told him they had a warrant for his arrest and he fled on foot. He later turned himself in to police.
The assault occurred on Feb. 28, 2021, filed by Lansford police for an incident in the 500 block of East Bertsch Street.
Police said Creveling got into a fight with another man. He punched and kicked the victim, officers said.
Creveling is currently an inmate in the county prison and admitted to a long-term drug addiction problem. He said he was “clean” for a period of time from drugs but relapsed.
He said his daughter was struck and killed by a car in Lansford and that night he overdosed. He said he wants to enter an inpatient rehab program.
He said, “I’m tired of being in jail. I’m tired of using drugs.”
In addition to the prison term Nanovic ordered Creveling to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, supply a DNA sample, attend and successfully complete an anger management course, pay court costs of over $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole.
He was given credit for 11 days already served.
Nanovic said he would consider furloughing Creveling from the prison to enter an inpatient program but said if he leaves without successfully completing it he must return to the prison and finish serving his sentence.
