Hitting the trail

With the summer in full swing, folks looking for a fun outdoor activity only need to look to their local park. Many parks in the area offer walking trails for people to take a relaxing stroll or an energetic hike. Along with the chance to take pets for a walk or ride a bicycle, park trails offer a fun and healthy way to spend summer days.

Here are a few places to visit:Hickory Run State Park in White Haven features a large variety with 23 different trails made up of 44 total miles.The park has a mix of easy trails, like the half-mile Deer Trail, and difficult ones like the Boulder Field Trail, which goes uphill for three and a half miles straight. Scenic views are also available from some of Hickory Run's paths. Hawk Falls Trail gives hikers a view of Hawk Falls, a 25-foot natural waterfall, and Fireline Trail features an overlook of the Lehigh River and Lehigh Gorge State Park.Those in Lehighton can head over to Beltzville State Park for a hike. The park has 15 miles of paths broken up into seven different trails. Sawmill Run Trail passes several historical locations on its 2-mile span, including a water raceway for a grist mill and an abandoned slate quarry that dates back to the 1800s.Those looking for a longer hike should find Trinity Gorge Trail enjoyable, as it stretches 4 miles through both open and wooded areas. One of Beltzville's most challenging hikes is Preachers Camp Trail, which is nearly 2 1/2 miles in length and follows the Pohopoco cove as it goes up the mountainside.Chestnuthill Township Park and West End Regional Park are only about 3 miles apart from each other and both offer nice trails to walk on for residents of the Brodheadsville area. Chestnuthill has a half-mile blacktop trail with a slight elevation change and a mile long gravel trail with more of a slope to it.West End has a three-quarter mile trail with a special dedication to it. The trail is named after Dave Fleetwood, who was killed during a public meeting in 2013. Fleetwood was the Chestnuthill Township supervisor and a member of the West End Park Open Space Commission. The park also has four miles of unnamed trails.In Schuylkill County lies Tuscarora State Park, where the walking paths vary from calm walks around the lake to strenuous hikes through the forest. Tuscarora has four trails available, spanning a combined 12 miles.Spirit of Tuscarora Trail is a 4 1/2-mile trek that goes up two big hills, but grants hikers a unique look at nature by taking them through different types of habitats. On the other end of the spectrum is Crow Trail, a flat mile and a half travel suitable for walking dogs.
