Luzerne woman sentenced to state prison for drug dealing
A Luzerne County woman was sentenced to a state prison term on Monday after pleading guilty to a drug-dealing charge.
Tammy Grosz, 41, of Freeland, was sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve 24 to 48 months in a state correctional institution on a charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance - heroin.
She was arrested by Weatherly police on July 23, 2020, after police responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle. Police attempted to make a vehicle stop but Grosz fled leading officers on a chase. She was eventually caught and taken into custody.
While being taken into custody she assaulted a state trooper, who was assisting Weatherly police in the chase and arrest.
She was originally charged with aggravated assault - attempt to cause serious bodily injury, a felony 1. She was charged with a total of 12 criminal counts including recklessly endangering another person, another felony count of PWID and false identification to law enforcement. All the charges except the one she pleaded to were dropped in a plea deal with the district attorney’s office.
Grosz admitted to a long-term drug addiction problem she said dates back about 20 years. She also said she has been in an out of drug rehabilitation programs and has two pending cases in Luzerne County. She also said she is a mother of eight.
She told Matika she would apply for placement in the state’s drug treatment program run within the prison system, when she transferred to a state prison. She is currently an inmate in the county prison.
She was also ordered to pay court costs of over $1,000, supply a DNA sample and when paroled, render 100 hours of community service. It was also noted she had a detainer filed against her from Luzerne County.
