Lehighton's Rocktoberfest brought fast cars, good music and delicious food to the borough's downtown park over the weekend.
It was the first edition of the fall event in downtown Lehighton, which was held to benefit breast cancer awareness. The event also marked the continuation of a Lehighton tradition - the coaster race. Racers aimed their soap box derby-style cars down Third Street, finishing their runs directly in front of borough hall.Connie Ahner said that the coaster race tradition had fallen by the wayside, but there's a growing interest among local kids and parents."Since the 150th, they've kind of restored it," she said. "And we're trying to keep it going."Locals had a great time regardless of a daunting forecast. Kristy Mertz of Lehighton said that borough residents are lucky with the many events downtown."We can walk down. It's nice," she said.Lehighton Pool Pals were among the organizations that were going to stay set up regardless of the weather. The group raised thousands of dollarsfor the Lehighton Borough Pool. And as a breast cancer survivor, volunteer Kim Gerhard said she was happy to do the same for Breast Cancer Awareness."You don't realize how it can affect you, breast cancer. It turns your world around," Gerhard said.
