Northern Lehigh school board won’t exceed tax rate index

Northern Lehigh School District will not go above the tax rate index in the event it decides to increase property taxes for the 2022-2023 school year. On a 6-0 vote, the school board on Monday adopted the Act 1 tax levy resolution to not exceed the 4.6% index.

Directors Donna Kulp, Gale Husack and Michelle Heckman were absent.

In June, the board on a 6-2 vote approved the 2021-2022 budget with a 2% increase.

The budget includes a millage rate of 23.5637 in Lehigh County, and a millage rate of 66.6064 in Northampton County.

That means a person with a median assessed home in Lehigh County will see a $70 increase, while a person who lives in Northampton County will see a $51 increase.

Sherri Molitoris, co-director of business affairs/human resources, said expenses were $34,522,628, while revenues were $33,793,721, which left the district with a $728,907 deficit. The district planned to use $131,831 out of fund balance to offset the retirement increases, $254,760 out of fund balance, and $342,316 in additional revenue the district is going to realize from the 2% increase, to offset the $728,907 deficit.
