The holidays are winding down but the Mahoning Valley Animal Hospital is still in the giving spirit.

Stephanie Prutzman recently gathered donated supplies and cash to buy food, blankets, and litter that will be split between two local animal shelters. Carbon County Friends of Animals will receive half the collection, while the Ruth Steinert Memorial SPCA Animal Shelter in Pottsville will receive the rest."They are almost ready to close their doors," Prutzman said of the SPCA.The Route 443 located vet started a new tradition: a giving tree. Handmade Christmas balls with requested items were pinned to the green construction paper tree hung inside the office."I thought since it was the holidays it'd be a good time to help those in need," Prutzman said.According to Prutzman over a dozen people donated."They were very generous.""I thought it was such a good idea, I had no clue how much was going to be brought in," said hospital employee Evie Warner.All donated supplies will be handed out soon.December is not the only time the hospital or shelters accept donations; shelters have very little funding and are run mostly by volunteers.Donations and supplies can be dropped off at the animal hospital or to shelters directly year-round.
