Four in robbery attempt jailed
Four people charged in a Schuylkill County robbery attempt, in which one defendant is also facing attempted homicide charges, have been jailed after being arraigned on various charges.
State police at Schuylkill Haven have identified the four suspects and their current addresses as: Dennis C. Shafe, 30, last known address of 247 S. Wylam St., Frackville; John J. Luback, 30, of 301 Lewis St., Minersville; and Frank D. Vannicolo, 25, and Ashley Marie Stumhofer, 26, both of 16 W. Union St., Schuylkill Haven.Shafe has been charged with criminal attempt to commit criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, criminal trespass and six counts of criminal conspiracy, all felonies.He is also charged with terroristic threats, simple assault, theft, receiving stolen property, recklessly endangering another person, conspiracy, harassment and disorderly conduct, as misdemeanors.The other three have been charged with three counts of conspiracy and one count each of burglary, criminal trespass, robbery and theft, all felonies.Shafe is jailed on $200,000 straight cash bail while Luback, Stumhofer and Vannicolo are jailed on $100,000 bail.The incident occurred at 4:07 a.m. on Monday at the Country Squire Motel, located at 300 Route 61 South, North Manheim Township.Troopers said Stumhofer drove the three males to the motel. The three males exited the vehicle and went to a room occupied by Adam Sturdean, 32, and Isaiah Dewan, 31.One of the three kicked the door and Dewan answered it. Dewan allowed the three to enter the room. Sturdean then went outside with Shafe. A shot was fired and the two returned to the room. No one was injured.A neighbor heard the shot and called 911. Troopers, along with Schuylkill Haven borough and Penn State campus police, responded.The three males began to run from the scene. Shafe and Luback were arrested a short time later.Vannicolo was arrested later in the day by Schuylkill Haven police. Stumhofer was found in her vehicle and taken into custody.Police said they recovered a Airsoft gun and a Bursa .380-caliber handgun at the scene.Preliminary hearings will be held before District Judge James Ferrier of Orwigsburg at a later date.
