NL School Board fills vacant seat
A Slatington woman has been chosen as the newest member of the Northern Lehigh School Board.
On an 8-0 measure, the school board on Monday agreed to appoint Gale Husack to a vacant seat on the board of directors.Husack was chosen to fill the vacant seat after former director Raymond "Jack" Follweiler died unexpectedly last month. She will serve until December 2015.To serve beyond that time frame, Husack must have her name placed on the November ballot.Husack, who has two children who attend elementary school in the district, is a graduate of Northern Lehigh. She works as a supervisor for customer service at Allentown Fluid Systems in Schnecksville.Husack said the reason why she applied for the seat is "to make sure there is the perspective that continues to stay with understanding the community and community involvement, and making sure that all of that information is put in a proper way, and keeping the children in mind when decisions are made."Husack was one of two candidates to apply for the seat.In a related matter, the board appointed board President Edward Hartman as interim Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit representative. The position had previously been occupied by Follweiler.Follweiler rememberedBefore Husack's appointment, Hartman took a few moments to honor the legacy of Follweiler.Hartman said that Follweiler was a good friend of his and many others.Of Follweiler, Hartman said he was a "fun-loving guy, he enjoyed life."Hartman said the district was "like a second home to him."Especially when it came to athletic events, Hartman said."He went to more athletic events than all the board members combined," Hartman said. "He was a gentleman, and he was a man we will miss."Hartman then asked for a moment of silence in memory of Follweiler.Superintendent Michael Michaels said he also held Follweiler in high regard.Michaels echoed Hartman's statements about Follweiler, and added that he was also "staunch in his support" of the students and schools in the district.Follweiler died July 11 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville as the result of a brain aneurysm after becoming ill the day before.Follweiler, 78, of Slatington, served nearly 12 years on the board.
