Tamaqua offers many opportunities
Throughout college I had dreams of volunteering in the Peace Corps, traveling the world, helping be people, making the world a better place. Those dreams never panned out.
Not many of us have the opportunity to volunteer in such grand schemes as the Peace Corps, Doctors Without Borders or American Red Cross. However, there are many opportunities to volunteer right here in your own backyard. Our communities, especially small communities, thrive because of volunteer organizations. Many still exist in our communities today such as Lions Clubs, Rotary Club, historical societies, sororities, BPW chapters and countless others.People's lives have become very busy with work, kids, and commuting. We think we do not have time to offer these organizations. The talents you can provide to these organizations can be indispensable. In Tamaqua alone, these organizations are responsible for the events which make small town life so special. The Tamaqua Lions Club organizes and hosts the Halloween Parade. The Tamaqua Historical Society is responsible for the Summer Festival and the Heritage Festival on Oct. 11.Why even our historical train station was saved and renovated by just a group of volunteers known as SOS, Save our Station. These men and women dedicated time and talents to making our town what it is today. These events are the very idea of what makes us sigh and say, "This is why I love living in a small town."That's sense of community.Businesses can get involved in these events also, by donating items or gift cards to fundraising events for these organizations. It is a great way to promote your own business as well as help out the community. You may even gain a few more customers which haven't visited your business. Consider a donation the next time you receive a solicitation letter to help sponsor an event. So take or make the time to volunteer your time and talents to an organization today, even if it is only for a specific event. There are so many opportunities.Upcoming events for the area include, an Economic Outlook Seminar offered by Mauch Chunk Trust. The event is co-sponsored by the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce, Carbon Chamber and Economic Development and PPL Electric Utilities. It will feature Dr. Edmond J. Seifried as the guest speaker who will speak about upcoming economic changes. It will take place on Oct. 13 at the Mahoning Valley Country Club in Lehighton. Registration begins at 7 p.m. and breakfast will begin at 7:30 p.m.Don't forget to come out and enjoy the Heritage Festival in downtown Tamaqua on Sunday. It is a great day to enjoy the fall foliage and what downtown Tamaqua has to offer.Other events for the Tamaqua area are the Halloween parade which is Oct. 27 sponsored by the Tamaqua Lions Club and Haunted Hay Rides at the Owl Creek Reservoir Oct. 17 and 18. Thank you to all the community organizations and volunteers for making these events possible. For more information on any of these events or information on joining the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce contact us at 570-668-1880.
