Portrait workshop
Portrait painter Stephen Bennett will host a free workshop for youth and their families at the Tamaqua Community Art Center. The workshop will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.Participants will have the opportunity to create their own portraits, an art concept designed to celebrate each person's unique and valuable culture, while instilling pride, self-worth and acceptance of others. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session and Jacque Patrick offered the invocation "The Wine."Penny Schlorf and Phil Price were added to the sick list and new member Susanne Highes received a warm welcome.The next meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 24, at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St.The group is open to anyone 55 or older, and the YMCA is handicap accessible.Bethany ECThe Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school classes are held at 9:15 a.m.Also on Sunday, a global outreach meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m. and the commission meetings will be at 11:45 a.m.Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry will hold a back to school party at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, Kan Sears event at 6 p.m.Salvation Army newsThe Tamaqua Salvation Army hosts a number of weekly programs in addition to its 11 a.m. Sunday worship services.Sunday school, for all ages, is held from 12:15 to 1 p.m. on Sundays.Activities include: Mondays, the Needlebugs meet at 9:30 a.m., youth meet at 3:30 p.m. and teens meet at 5 p.m.; Tuesdays, men's and women's fellowship are held at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, Older and Bolder group meets at 10 a.m. and Timbrels, Bible study and prayer meeting are from 5 to 8 p.m.; Thursday, youth group meets at 4:15 p.m.Computer and AARP drivers' safety classes are being planned for the fall, with more information to be announced at a later date.Contact Kathy Kunkel at 570-668-1250 or
