West Penn Township’s police department could eventually be in store for several upgrades.
Supervisor Tony Prudenti mentioned at Monday’s board of supervisors meeting that he recently looked at the township’s police station with Police Chief Brian Johnson.Prudenti suggested that a part-time secretary, a part-time cleaning person, the installation of a privacy fence, a holding cage and blacktop should all be included as part of the improvements. He said a part-time secretary who would work about 24 hours a week would help free up Johnson as well as patrol officers.Johnson said the police department gets a lot of walk-in traffic, and handles about 100 phone call per month.Prudenti added, “And it’s another way we don’t have to add another full-time officer.”He said a privacy fence would come at a minimal cost, as volunteers would be willing to put it up.Board Chairman Jim Dean asked, “Do we have the wherewithal to do that?”Board solicitor Holly Heintzelman cautioned Prudenti that the township has to see to it that the additions do not exceed a certain amount. The board also• Hired Chris Fischi as a part-time police officer at the salary of $16 an hour.• Agreed to spend $2,005 on a camera surveillance system at the annex building/police station.• Agreed to advertise an ordinance to purchase a police car at the board’s March 6 meeting.
